Well, I have hundreds of beautiful autumn photos that I took on Sunday, yet I am posting this urban asphalt covered photo. I am trying to be true to the mission of the City Daily Photo project. The photo must be taken that day. So I just have this for Monday and I will have to show of all my beautiful autumn photos at some other venue.

This shows the importance of accessible sidewalks. I smiled when I saw this women tooling down the sidewalk, know that she had a bit of independence. Duluth is working on a “Complete Streets” initiative, which will insure that thoroughfares are not just for vehicles, but for walkers, cyclists…everyone.

London Road McDonald's razed, new one expected by fall - Mon Aug 30 2010

The existing McDonald's was torn down and a new building will be in it's place.  I have a friend who lives in the top floor a gorgeous triplex behind the construction site. They have a beautiful view of the lake, but listening to the noise from this construction gets a little tiring. I suppose in this economy any construction is a good thing. Since I like to do things sustainably I am curious about how the material form the old McDonald's was disposed of.

[Added Sept 1] There is a letter to the editor from the owner of the triplex in the Duluth News Tribune about this construction and the removal of eight or nine 30 foot tall ponderosa pines. These pines served to buffer the noise from the busy fast food take-out joint.

Oops! It seems Duluth’s planning and zoning staffers were a bit quick in approving a building permit for the new McDonald’s on London Road at 21st Avenue East. In their speed to approve plans, city planners seemed to have missed the intent of McDonald’s to remove eight or nine 30-foot-tall ponderosa pines on the property boundary. The trees, for many years, had buffered activities at McDonald’s from the five residential properties between the restaurant and Jefferson Street.

Upholstered chairs, plasma TVs and free WiFi will all be part of a new McDonald's restaurant to be built at London Road and 21st Avenue East in Duluth.

The existing restaurant is expected to close this month so it can be razed and rebuilt into one of the franchise's hip new eateries more reminiscent of Starbucks than the traditional McDonald's.
